To drive in Bali, you need an International Drivers License Permit

Driving on Bali's roads is an adventure you'll never forget.

But before you hop on a scooter or behind the wheel in Bali, there's a critical document you'll need: an International Driver's License or Permit (IDP/IDL).

Just to clear up any confusion, an International Drivers License (IDL) and an International Drivers Permit (IDP) are the same thing. Different countries use different names, but they are the same thing.

Why You Need an IDP/IDL in Bali

    The Legal Requirement

In Bali, irrespective of your nationality, having an IDP/IDL isn’t merely a suggestion—it’s a legal requirement.

If you plan on operating any motorized vehicle, be it a scooter, a car, or a motorcycle, an IDP/IDL is essential.

Your home country's license isn't sufficient (bring that too).

You have to carry both your home country's license and an IDL/IDP.

"The IDP/IDL is the only official, internationally recognized official translation of your original driving license. That’s why you need both, even if you come from an English-speaking country."

The IDP/IDL, together with your national license, is a must-have while traversing the island's highways and backroads.

    How to Obtain an IDP/IDL

The process of acquiring an IDP/IDL is straightforward and can be completed in your home country. Most countries have automobile associations or licensing authorities that issue these permits.

Typically, the process involves filling out an application form, providing a copy of your national driver's license, and paying a fee.

The IDP/IDL is then mailed to you or made available for pickup.

    Online Options for IDP/IDL:

Thanks to our digital age, you can quickly secure an IDP/IDL online.

Through our partnership with the International Drivers Association, you can obtain a digital version of your IDP/IDL—fast and secure. This is a convenient option if you're already in Bali.

However, if you're still at home, you can opt for both the booklet and the digital version.

Tip: If you've already landed in Bali and realize you've forgotten your IDP/IDL, don't panic. You can buy it online instantly.

Driving in Bali: Rules and Regulations

    Driving license categories

In Bali, the type of vehicle you plan on operating determines the category of license required. For driving a car, a Category B license is necessary, while a Category A license is required for motorbikes.

    Traffic laws and etiquette

Bali's traffic laws are strictly enforced, and as a visitor, you’re expected to adhere to them. This includes wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle or scooter and carrying your vehicle's registration papers.

Traffic police frequently stop vehicles, and failing to produce the required documents can result in fines. In extreme cases, your vehicle may even be impounded.

"If the police fine you on the spot, pay it. The alternative is you will have to attend court. Don't think you can jump on a plane and skip the consequences - you are likely to get a surprise at immigration when you depart".

    Driving in Bali: The experience

Driving in Bali is not for the faint-hearted. The traffic can be chaotic, and unexpected obstacles are commonplace.

However, once you get the hang of it, driving in Bali can be an exhilarating experience.

In truth, if you drive in tandem with the traffic, you won't drive much more than 40km/hour in a car and a bit faster on a bike. In other words, the traffic looks chaotic, but it's quite sedate, even though it's weaving all over the place!

And if you drive like an idiot, expect to be in an accident. The locals were almost born on motorcycles, so they know what they are doing on their home turf; you don't.

    Renting a vehicle in Bali

Bali offers plenty of options to rent a vehicle, from large companies to local businesses. Whether you're looking for a scooter, car, or motorcycle, you'll find it in Bali.

Remember, even when renting, you'll need to present your IDP/IDL and national driving license.

    Has Bali banned motorcycle rental?

The quick answer is not yet.

The only recent rule change is to require an International Drivers License Permit as well as your home country's license.

But you might have heard in the news that Bali is talking about banning motorcycle rentals for tourists. This has not happened as of the time of writing, and somehow we think it is unlikely. If you have definite plans to rent a motorcycle, keep checking our news section for updates.

The way we can encourage Bali to allow tourists to continue renting is for us all to behave responsibly, drive carefully, wear a helmet, and carry the correct IDP/IDL and your local license.

    Insurance: a critical consideration

When renting a vehicle in Bali, ensure it comes with insurance covering damages and theft. However, this doesn't cover personal accidents. It's crucial to have travel and health insurance to cover any injuries you might sustain in an accident.

    Embrace the adventure, responsibly

Bali is a beautiful island with much to explore. Having the freedom to drive around can enhance your experience and allow you to discover places off the beaten path.

However, with this freedom comes responsibility and doing the right thing, so we can all be allowed to keep driving on Bali. Always ensure you have the correct documentation, respect the local laws, and prioritize safety.

Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination, and speed is not the priority - you're on holiday!

So get your IDP/IDL, buckle up, and get ready to embark on an unforgettable Bali adventure.
