Tourists who break the law in Bali will be deported

Authorities in Bali are getting tougher on outsiders who break the law on the Island of Gods.

Anggiat Napitupulu, who heads the Bali Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, revealed that 93 foreigners who stayed in Bali have been deported from Indonesia from Jan. 1 to April 17 this year. The vast majority were kicked out due to visa/permit violations and other violations of the law.

Russia represented the biggest slice of the pie with 24 deportees, followed by Nigeria with seven and the US and Australia with six each. With these numbers, it seems that last year's record of deportations is likely to be surpassed this year as there were only a total of 194 deportations out of Bali in all of last year.

The authorities are taking action against those who violate local laws or regulations. This includes a recent proposal by Bali's governor Wayan Koster to ban all foreigners from renting motorbikes and scooters due to a spate of incidents involving foreign riders abusing police, failing to wear helmets, and using fake number plates.

Some tourists argue that an age limit would solve the problem rather than banning all foreigners from renting scooters. However, Agustinus Winjaya warns against forcing regulations on everyone due to actions made by one or two tourists. Meanwhile, Russian and Ukrainian tourists face the heaviest crackdown as they have been flouting road rules and working illegally in Bali.

"If they make it hard to get visas for Russians, Ukrainians, we will look for other places to go," said Russian tourist Alexander Ivanov. "South-East Asia is not Indonesia alone; Thailand has beautiful places."
